Our bilateral relations have seen significant advancement in recent years. In 2022, India established an embassy in Nouakchott, and Mauritania Embassy was established in New Delhi in 2025.

Economic exchanges between two countries have reached approximately US$1 billion. For years, cooperation has concentrated on mining, agriculture, road construction, and water infrastructure. In support of development projects, India has offered generous credit lines worth millions of dollars, especially targeting the mining and drinking-water sectors, and has extended training grants to Mauritanian professionals across various fields.In terms of trade, we import textiles, pharmaceuticals, plastic products, and motorized three-wheeled vehicles from India, and we export fish products to India.In 2024, cooperation received a major boost when a senior Indian delegation, led by the Deputy Minister of External Affairs, visited our country from March 20–22.

During the visit, the delegation met with the President of the Republic. On March 21, the first round of formal consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs was held, enabling both sides to review their key areas of cooperation. Both parties committed to continuing these consultations.

The visit of Her Excellency President Smt. Droupadi Murmu to Mauritania in October 2024, the first ever visit by an Indian President, gave a significant boost to bilateral relations. During the visit, both sides held extensive discussions on avenues for enhancing cooperation, and several agreements and memoranda of understanding were signed, including the following:

  • Protocol for consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African cooperation and Mauritanians abroad of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the Ministry of External Affairs of India;

  • Agreement between the Government of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and e Government of the Republic India on exemption from visa requirement for holders of diplomatic and official passports;

  • A cultural exchange program between the government of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the government of the Republic of India for the years 2024-2028;

  • A memorandum of understanding between the Mauritanian Diplomatic Academy and the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service.

Beyond the formal agreements, future cooperation should place strong emphasis on encouraging the private sectors of both countries to engage in joint investments. Priority areas include mining, agriculture, water and road infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, and digitalization. Strengthening partnerships in these sectors would not only support economic growth and job creation but also contribute to sustainable development and long-term technological collaboration between and Mauritania India.
